Pixel Watch 5 UK Review

Pixel Watch 5 Leaked Specs and Features

The Pixel Watch 5 is set to be released in the UK on 12 August, alongside the Pixel 11 phones, but the latest leaks have left many feeling underwhelmed. The new smartwatch seems to be following in the footsteps of the Pixel 10a, with only minor upgrades and a higher starting price.

The leaked specs reveal that the Pixel Watch 5 will feature a more advanced version of Gemini Intelligence, which promises to use AI to take over menial tasks, such as booking a table at a nearby restaurant. The smartwatch will also have better sleep tracking, with a sleep score based on performance, similar to the Apple Watch Series 11.

Other upgrades include a slightly larger battery, with 332mAh and 465mAh for the 41mm and 44mm versions respectively, and double the storage at 64GB. However, the marketing slides quote the same 30/40-hour battery life as before, which may not make a significant difference to everyday use.

Comparison to Other Smartwatches

In comparison to other smartwatches on the market, such as the Samsung Galaxy Watch 9, the Pixel Watch 5 seems to be lacking. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 features a slimmed-down chassis, longer battery life, and more expansive fitness tracking software, making the Pixel Watch 5 feel like a less exciting option.

The Pixel Watch 5 will also come with a higher starting price, at £369 for the 41mm model and £399 for the 45mm alternative. This is £20 and £50 more expensive than the previous model, respectively. The price increase, combined with the lack of significant upgrades, may make the Pixel Watch 5 less appealing to UK consumers.

Google’s Future Plans

As the price of tech continues to rise, and the scope for upgrades seems to decrease, Google may benefit from having a budget-friendly option in their lineup. The Fitbit Charge 6 is a fitness tracker that caters to the fitness crowd, but a more affordable smartwatch with proper smart features, similar to the Apple Watch SE 3 and the Samsung Galaxy Watch FE, could be a welcome addition to the market.

Here are the Pixel Watch 5 specs in full: Screen: AMOLED LTPO Actua 360, 320 ppi, up to 3,000 nits, Processor: Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated + Cortex-M55 coprocessor, RAM: 3GB, Storage: 64GB, Battery 41mm/44mm: 332mAh / 465mAh, OS: Wear OS 7, Connectivity: Bluetooth 6.0, Wi-Fi, NFC, UWB, Resistance: 5ATM, IP68.

Oura Ring 6: Smart Lighting Control

Oura Ring on a person's hand, with a smart light bulb in the background

Introduction

The Oura Ring 5 has only just been released, but the company is already exploring new features for its next generation of smart rings. A recent patent application suggests that the Oura Ring 6 could include the ability to control your lights and blinds, making it an even more integral part of your daily routine.

Patent Application

The patent application, which was spotted by Gadgets and Wearables, is titled “Techniques for evaluating ambient light exposure and chronotype via wearable devices.” It details how the Oura Ring could track the light conditions around you, including the timing, intensity, duration, and colour of the light, including ultraviolet (UV) light. This data would then be used to help you get better sleep, and could even be used to control your smart home devices, such as the Philips Hue smart lighting system or the Samsung SmartThings hub.

Smart Home Integration

The Oura Ring could automatically dim the lights and close the blinds or curtains as you get closer to bedtime, and then open them in the morning to help you wake up. This could be especially useful when combined with other smart home devices, such as the Amazon Echo or the Google Nest Hub. You could also set rules to turn off the lights if you fall asleep with them on, or to adjust the lighting to a specific level based on the time of day.

Technical Details

The patent application suggests that the Oura Ring could use its existing LEDs to measure environmental light, but a dedicated light sensor could also be used. This would be similar to the light sensor found on many smartphones, such as the Apple iPhone 14 or the Samsung Galaxy S23. A dedicated light sensor would likely provide more accurate readings, but it could also affect the design of the ring.

Conclusion

While it’s impossible to know for sure whether the Oura Ring 6 will include this feature, it’s certainly an interesting idea. The ability to control your lights and blinds from your smart ring could be a major selling point, especially when combined with the ring’s existing features, such as sleep tracking and fitness monitoring. Whether or not this feature makes it into the next generation of Oura Rings, it’s clear that the company is committed to pushing the boundaries of what a smart ring can do.

Pixel 11a: The Exciting Alternative

Pixel 11a design concept

Why the Pixel 11a is More Exciting than Pixel 11

Google’s next flagship phones will launch on 12 August – but I’ve already got my eye on what’s coming after. While likely contenders for the title of 2026’s best phone, I’m finding it hard to get excited about the Pixel 11 series. Unless you care about ‘Pixel Glow’ RGB lights on the back (I definitely don’t!), it looks to be more of the same from Google, just with an unappetising price rise.

I’m not about to claim that the Pixel 11a will be much different. Google will likely follow the Pixel 10a’s lead very closely – a phone that epitomises the 2026 trend for tiny year-on-year upgrades. However, I’m still looking forward to its likely March 2027 launch much more than to the Pixel 11 series, even if there’s one potential dealbreaker.

No Chipset Compromise?

The leak that inspired this article is the most exciting by far. According to Mystic Leaks, who has a strong track record for Pixel news, the Pixel 11a will be powered by Google’s Tensor G6 chipset. That’s right, the same one we’re expecting across the Pixel 11 lineup.

While far from confirmed, this could be massive for the Pixel 11a. Remember, the Pixel 10a stuck with its predecessor’s Tensor G4 chip; it’d be a huge two-generation leap. Performance on the Pixel 11a could get a big upgrade, making it a compelling alternative to the Samsung Galaxy S26 or the Apple iPhone 17.

Cameras that Sit Almost Flush with the Back of the Phone

I think cameras that sit almost flush with the back of the phone are massively underrated. Sure, you can’t pack in some high-end camera tech without making the phone incredibly thick, but it makes for a sleek design and avoids the annoying wobble when typing while it’s on a desk.

The Pixel 9a’s design is even more appealing than at launch, and I’m delighted to see Google stick with the same design for the Pixel 10a. And if (as expected), the Pixel 11a continues to omit the telephoto lens, it makes perfect sense to continue with it. This design choice is also reminiscent of the Samsung Galaxy A54, which also features a sleek camera design.

Worth the Weight (Literally)

Another aspect of phone design that I believe people overlook is weight. Remember, this is something that you’ll be holding for multiple hours a day, either in your hand, pocket or bag. I recently switched from the 215g Galaxy Z Fold 7 to the regular Galaxy S26, which is just 167g.

The 48g difference was instantly noticeable, and it’s made the S26 a far more comfortable phone to use day-to-day. Meanwhile, the Pixel 10a was a full 21g lighter than the base Pixel 10, with other models in the range even heavier, and it’s likely to be similar again this time. Trust me, ditching the glass back for plastic is well worth the trade-off, especially when compared to the glass back of the Apple iPhone 17 Pro.

The Price

It’s no secret that phone prices are on the rise. The ongoing ‘RAMaggedon’, where incredible demand for memory chips (known as RAM) for AI has led to a major shortage and price hikes on many of the tech products which rely on them. The Pixel 11 series is unlikely to be immune, even if reports of the rises don’t tell the full story.

We’re expecting the base Pixel 11, the cheapest route into the lineup, to now start at a hefty £879. Not exactly affordable for a lot of people! While the situation may be even worse by the time the Pixel 11a rolls around in early 2027, it’d be a real surprise to see Google hike prices by more than £100/$100, meaning it should cost under £600/$600 and remain well within mid-range phone territory, competing with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy A74 and the OnePlus 11R.

A Potential Dealbreaker?

For all the reasons to be hopeful, one Pixel 11a leak makes for concerning reading. Just like the Pixel 10a, all signs point to Google continuing to omit built-in Qi2 magnets on the Pixel 11a. Not only does this block access to a wide range of compatible Pixelsnap and MagSafe accessories, but it also means wireless charging speeds will likely be capped at close to the current 10W.

Will this be a dealbreaker? Not necessarily, but it would be a real shame, especially with no issues on compatibility with a plastic back. Built-in Qi2 is one of the Pixel 10 series’ best features, and its absence might be felt, especially for those who use wireless charging pads like the Belkin Boost Charge.

Pixel Phones Get Smarter

Google Pixel phone with Gemini app

Introduction

Google is working on new features that will make Pixel phones more useful and convenient to use. With the upcoming Made by Google event, where the Google Pixel 11 series will be launched, news has emerged about two labour-saving Android features in development.

Device Help Feature

A new experimental Device Help feature is being constructed within the Gemini app. This feature allows users to describe their issue in natural language, and Gemini will figure out a fix. For example, if a user tells Gemini that their screen is too yellow, the app will examine the device’s settings and inform the user that the Night Light feature is likely to blame.

This feature appears to be operating under the Labs label, which means it’s still under development. However, it could be genuinely useful, especially with Google’s recent confirmation that its Google Assistant will be discontinued on September 4.

App Launch Shortcut

In another report, it’s been discovered that Android 17 QPR2 Beta 2 contains references to an App Launch Shortcut. This feature will allow users to launch apps directly from their lock screen, similar to how they can access the camera or torch without unlocking their phone.

Discovered code suggests that there will soon be more lock screen shortcut options, as well as the ability to add more than one app shortcut at a time. This could be seen as Google addressing an inherent limitation of its Pixel UI compared to its third-party Android partners, such as Samsung and its Galaxy series, including the Samsung Galaxy S25.

Quick Affordances

References to Quick Affordances have also been found, which are described as interactive UI elements that appear on the lock screen. Scanning a QR code or drafting a message could become much snappier on a future version of Android, and it looks as if Pixel users will benefit first.

These new features will make Pixel phones more convenient to use, and with the upcoming launch of the Google Pixel 11 series, it’s an exciting time for Android users. Other brands, such as Apple, with its Apple Watch Series 10 and iPad Air M2, will have to keep up with Google’s innovations.

Pixel Watch 5 Leaks and Release

Pixel Watch 5 image

Introduction

The Pixel Watch 5 is set to be announced on August 12, and leaks have already started to surface. One of the most interesting leaks is the Steph Curry Special Edition of the Pixel Watch 5, which features a unique band design and water-repellent coating. This edition is similar to the Fitbit Air version, which was also designed in collaboration with Steph Curry.

Design and Features

The Pixel Watch 5 Steph Curry Special Edition has a distinctive orange and grey/beige design, with the NBA star’s name on the strap along with the hashtag #LockedIn. The band is water-repellent, but Google notes that this protection is not permanent and may diminish over time due to normal wear and tear. The watch itself is the same as the standard Pixel Watch 5, with the special edition referring only to the band.

In comparison to other smartwatches on the market, such as the Apple Watch Series 10 or the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6, the Pixel Watch 5 has a more traditional watch design. This is evident in the recent teaser video released by Google, which pokes fun at rivals for their less-than-traditional designs. The video says, “Imagine a watch that tracks your health, sleep and fitness… but still has the decency to look like a watch.” This is a clear jab at brands like Apple, which has been criticized for the square design of its Apple Watch Series 10.

Price and Availability

The Pixel Watch 5 Steph Curry Special Edition is set to cost €579.99, which is €30 more than the standard model. However, it’s worth noting that this edition is limited to the larger 45mm LTE model, which may not be suitable for those with smaller wrists. Additionally, the watch may only be available in the US, as the small print notes that it’s “Not available in all countries”.

In terms of pricing, the Pixel Watch 5 is competitive with other high-end smartwatches on the market, such as the Apple Watch Series 10 or the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6. However, the limited availability of the Steph Curry Special Edition may make it harder for fans to get their hands on one.

Conclusion

The Pixel Watch 5 Steph Curry Special Edition is an interesting twist on the standard Pixel Watch 5. With its unique band design and water-repellent coating, it’s sure to appeal to fans of the NBA star. However, the limited availability and higher price point may make it less accessible to some consumers. As the release date approaches, we’ll be keeping an eye on any further leaks or announcements from Google.

The recent teaser video from Google has also sparked interest in the Pixel Watch 5, with its traditional watch design and fitness tracking features. As the smartwatch market continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how the Pixel Watch 5 stacks up against competitors like the Apple Watch Series 10, Samsung Galaxy Watch 6, and Fitbit Ionic.

Pixel 12 Leak Suggests Unexpected Display Changes and Wider Aspect Ratios

Leak shows Google Pixel 12 series display specifications and aspect ratio changes

What the leak reveals about Pixel 12 display specs

Recent data from the GSMA IMEI database, attributed to a source known as OVRPlus, shows three new entries that correspond to the upcoming Google Pixel 12 lineup. The listings include a base model labelled GC0QU, a Pixel 12 Pro identified as GWU59, and a larger Pixel 12 Pro XL marked G7U1Y. While the database does not disclose pricing or hardware details beyond screen dimensions, it does give a clear picture of the resolution choices Google is planning for 2027.

How the new aspect ratios differ from Pixel 11

The most noticeable shift is a slight reduction in vertical pixel count across the standard and Pro models. The current Pixel 11 sports a 1080 by 2424 panel, whereas the leaked figures suggest the Pixel 12 will use a 1080 by 2400 display. This change translates to a marginally wider aspect ratio, moving from roughly 20.5:9 to about 20.9:9. It is not a downgrade in pixel density, as the horizontal resolution remains the same, but it does indicate Google is experimenting with a subtly broader screen shape that could improve media consumption and multitasking.

Pixel 12 Pro Fold gets a sharper screen

The foldable variant tells a different story. The Pixel 12 Pro Fold appears to receive a higher‑resolution inner panel, jumping from the Pixel 11 Pro Fold’s 2076 by 2152 matrix to a 2296 by 2404 layout. This increase suggests a sharper, more detailed experience for users who prefer foldable devices. Despite the boost, Google does not seem to be joining the crowded wide‑fold market dominated by devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 or the upcoming iPhone Duo. Instead, the company may be focusing on a premium, compact fold that balances size and clarity.

Implications for the broader smartphone market

If Google proceeds with these display tweaks, competitors may feel pressure to revisit their own aspect‑ratio strategies. The Samsung Galaxy S24, for instance, currently uses a 1080 by 2400 panel that aligns closely with the rumored Pixel 12 dimensions. Apple’s iPhone 16 is expected to retain a 1170 by 2532 screen, but any shift toward wider ratios could influence future iOS designs. Meanwhile, other Android manufacturers such as OnePlus 12 and Xiaomi Mi 14 are also rumored to experiment with subtle aspect‑ratio adjustments to differentiate their flagship offerings.

Beyond the numbers, the leak hints at Google’s broader design philosophy for 2027. By keeping the horizontal resolution steady while nudging the vertical count, the company may be aiming for a more cinematic feel without sacrificing battery life or software scaling. The sharper Pro Fold display could appeal to power users who demand high‑resolution content on a foldable form factor, positioning the Pixel 12 Pro Fold as a niche but compelling alternative to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8.

Overall, the early data paints a picture of incremental but purposeful evolution. Google appears to be fine‑tuning its display language rather than overhauling it, a strategy that could keep the Pixel brand competitive while avoiding the pitfalls of radical hardware changes. As more details emerge, enthusiasts will be watching to see whether these modest adjustments translate into a noticeably better user experience.

Pixel 11a: The Exciting Alternative

Google Pixel 11a with Tensor G6 chipset

Forget Pixel 11 – The Pixel 11a is More Exciting

Remember, the Pixel 10a stuck with its predecessor’s Tensor G4 chip, so it’d be a huge two-generation leap. Performance on the Pixel 11a could get a big upgrade, and with the Tensor G6 looking set to be one of the first smartphone chips to use a 2nm process, beating even Qualcomm to the punch, it’s expected to yield major improvements to both battery efficiency and overheating, two issues that commonly affect the Pixel 10a.

Cameras that Sit Almost Flush with the Back of the Phone are Massively Underrated

When the Pixel 9a introduced the barely-there rear camera design, it was controversial. Many people lamented the loss of Pixel’s signature camera bar and a design which was devoid of any real personality. But, as I wrote in my review of the Samsung Galaxy S25, it really didn’t bother me at the time. And after 15 months using almost exclusively huge, protruding rear cameras, my opinion on it has only become more favourable.

I think cameras that sit almost flush with the back of the phone are massively underrated. Sure, you can’t pack in some high-end camera tech without making the phone incredibly thick, but it makes for a sleek design and avoids the annoying wobble when typing while it’s on a desk. While I didn’t test it myself, I was delighted to see Google stick with the same design for the Pixel 10a, which is similar to the design of the Apple iPhone 15.

Worth the Weight (Literally)

Another aspect of phone design that I believe people overlook is weight. Remember, this is something that you’ll be holding for multiple hours a day, either in your hand, pocket or bag. I recently switched from the 215g Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 to the regular Samsung Galaxy S26, which is just 167g.

Trust me, ditching the glass back for plastic is well worth the trade-off, especially when compared to the iPad Air M2, which has a sleek design but is quite heavy.

The Price

It’s no secret that phone prices are on the rise. The ongoing ‘RAMaggedon’, where incredible demand for memory chips (known as RAM) for AI has led to a major shortage and price hikes on many of the tech products which rely on them. For most people, buying a Pixel 11 means tying yourself down to a long, expensive contract, similar to the contracts offered for the Apple Watch Series 10.

The Pixel 11 series is unlikely to be immune, even if reports of the rises don’t tell the full story. We’re expecting the base Pixel 11, the cheapest route into the lineup, to now start at a hefty £879. Not exactly affordable for a lot of people! While the situation may be even worse by the time the Pixel 11a rolls around in early 2027, it’d be a real surprise to see Google hike prices by more than £100/$100, meaning it should cost under £600/$600 and remain well within mid-range phone territory.

I’m always saying to friends and family that phones are one of the areas where people most consistently overspend. The Pixel 11a offers a much more realistic prospect of buying outright, allowing you to dramatically cut costs by opting for a cheap SIM-only deal, similar to the deals offered by Amazon Prime Day UK. For most people, buying a Pixel 11 means tying yourself down to a long, expensive contract. The alternative is always more exciting.

But even if it arrives without Qi2, there are plenty of reasons to be excited about the Pixel 11a. If you prefer a minimalist design or just want to save some cash, it could be well worth the wait. And don’t forget, Pixels are notorious for sharp price drops after launch – especially once a successor has arrived. If you don’t care about the latest hardware, the Pixel 10a could be an even better choice once the 11a arrives.
