Pixel Watch 5 Leaked Specs and Features
The Pixel Watch 5 is set to be released in the UK on 12 August, alongside the Pixel 11 phones, but the latest leaks have left many feeling underwhelmed. The new smartwatch seems to be following in the footsteps of the Pixel 10a, with only minor upgrades and a higher starting price.
The leaked specs reveal that the Pixel Watch 5 will feature a more advanced version of Gemini Intelligence, which promises to use AI to take over menial tasks, such as booking a table at a nearby restaurant. The smartwatch will also have better sleep tracking, with a sleep score based on performance, similar to the Apple Watch Series 11.
Other upgrades include a slightly larger battery, with 332mAh and 465mAh for the 41mm and 44mm versions respectively, and double the storage at 64GB. However, the marketing slides quote the same 30/40-hour battery life as before, which may not make a significant difference to everyday use.
Comparison to Other Smartwatches
In comparison to other smartwatches on the market, such as the Samsung Galaxy Watch 9, the Pixel Watch 5 seems to be lacking. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 features a slimmed-down chassis, longer battery life, and more expansive fitness tracking software, making the Pixel Watch 5 feel like a less exciting option.
The Pixel Watch 5 will also come with a higher starting price, at £369 for the 41mm model and £399 for the 45mm alternative. This is £20 and £50 more expensive than the previous model, respectively. The price increase, combined with the lack of significant upgrades, may make the Pixel Watch 5 less appealing to UK consumers.
Google’s Future Plans
As the price of tech continues to rise, and the scope for upgrades seems to decrease, Google may benefit from having a budget-friendly option in their lineup. The Fitbit Charge 6 is a fitness tracker that caters to the fitness crowd, but a more affordable smartwatch with proper smart features, similar to the Apple Watch SE 3 and the Samsung Galaxy Watch FE, could be a welcome addition to the market.
