Samsung Galaxy App Gets Major Upgrade

Samsung is working on a huge overhaul to one of its key apps on Galaxy phones and other devices. The SmartThings app is at the very heart of Samsung’s extensive smart home ecosystem, connecting everything from TVs to washing machines, including the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Samsung Galaxy S25.

It’s pretty big news, then, when news emerges of a major upgrade – especially when it’s been such a long time coming. As SamMobile points out, SmartThings has yet to receive a modern visual update to match the one that accompanied its other apps with the launch of One UI 8.0 late last year.

New Features

The new-look SmartThings will be led by a familiar pill-shaped floating tab bar, as found in Samsung’s other apps following their own visual overhaul. This tab will feature five headings: Home, Devices, Life, Routines, and Menu. The app’s background will be dynamic, changing to reflect the time of day and location, together with nine preloaded live wallpapers.

SmartThings Now cards will supply smart suggestions at the top of the home screen, and there will be three new types of widgets: Device Control, Screen Device Control, and Routines. The Life section will include a series of lifestyle-related features, including Clothing Care, Energy, Food, Home Care, and Music Sync, which can be controlled using the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 or Apple Watch Series 10.

Availability

It’s a pretty big overhaul to this fundamental Samsung app, all things considered, and history tells us that it should arrive as a totally free update. We don’t know when that update will land as yet – this isn’t an official reveal after all – but the fact that its whole aesthetic matches that of One UI 9.0 (based on Android 17) suggests that it’s likely to be soon, considering Samsung is almost at Beta 5.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 series debuted Samsung’s latest UI, and it’ll be rolling out to other compatible Samsung devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy S25 and Samsung Galaxy Tab S9, over the coming months. The iPad Air M2 and other non-Samsung devices will not be compatible with this update.
