Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Hinge Compromise
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Hinge Compromise Makes Perfect Sense
Samsung may have been forced to compromise on an element of its next foldables as it seeks a creaseless display. The South Korean tech giant will announce its new foldable line-up in just a couple of weeks, and we’re expecting big things. As well as a brand-new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 model, the company looks set to refine the design of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra – its Z Fold 7 successor.
According to regular Samsung leaker Ice Universe, the latter will include a new approach to a persistent foldable problem: what to do about that internal display crease. In an effort to reduce said crease on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series, the tipster claims, Samsung has opted to re-engineer the hinge. It now feels “noticeably different”, apparently, with a more “decisive” folding action.
The hinge feel of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series is noticeably different from previous generations. To further improve the crease, Samsung has made the folding and unfolding action more decisive. In other words, it is no longer as easy to hold at certain angles as before. This change brings with it “a significant improvement in crease control”, comparable to that of the Oppo Find N6, which launched earlier this year with an almost creaseless display.
We take that to mean that the hinge on these Galaxy Z Fold 8 devices no longer allows you to pose the displays at as many different angles as, say, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 or the Huawei Mate X3. However, it seems like a totally worthwhile sacrifice, given that it brings with it such a significant improvement in crease control. Will it allow the Z Fold 8 handsets to rank among the best foldables you can buy, alongside the likes of the Motorola Razr 2025 and the Google Pixel Fold? With Samsung expected to hold its next Galaxy Unpacked event on 22 July, we don’t have long to wait to find out.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 series is expected to feature a range of improvements, including a more powerful processor, potentially the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and improved cameras, potentially including a 108MP primary sensor. The devices will likely run on Android 13, with Samsung’s One UI 5.1 skin on top. We can also expect to see a range of accessories, including cases and screen protectors, designed specifically for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series.
In terms of competition, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 series will face stiff competition from the likes of the Apple iPhone 15 Pro, the OnePlus 11 Pro, and the Xiaomi 13 Pro. However, with its unique foldable design and improved crease control, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series is likely to appeal to those looking for a device that offers something different from the traditional smartphone experience.
Overall, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 hinge compromise makes perfect sense, given the significant improvement in crease control it brings. We look forward to seeing the devices in person and putting them through their paces. With the Galaxy Unpacked event just around the corner, we don’t have long to wait to find out more about the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 series and what it has to offer.
