Google Photos bug blocks sharing and editing on Pixel and Samsung devices – temporary fixes

Screenshot of Google Photos app showing unresponsive share edit delete buttons on Android phone

What is happening with Google Photos?

Android users have started reporting that the Google Photos app stops responding after an edit is made. The row of icons for share, edit and delete becomes inactive, meaning users cannot save changes, share the picture or remove it from their library.

Which devices are affected?

The problem first appeared on Google Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 6a devices, but it has quickly spread to other Android phones. Owners of the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra have also confirmed the same behaviour, and early reports suggest that the issue can show up on the OnePlus 12 and the Xiaomi Mi 14 as well.

Why is this bug a big deal?

Google Photos is the default gallery for many Android users, and it is tightly integrated with Google Drive and Google Lens. When the share and delete buttons stop working, users lose a quick way to back up images, send them to friends or clean up their collection. For photographers who rely on the app to edit on the go, the bug can disrupt workflow and cause frustration.

What is Google doing about it?

A Google spokesperson told Android Authority that the Photos team is rolling out a fix as soon as possible. The company plans to push an update through the Google Play Store within the next few days. In the meantime, users can follow the work‑around steps below to keep their photo library functional.

How to work around the issue

First, when you edit a picture, choose the option Save as copy instead of Save. This creates a new file with the edits while leaving the original untouched, so the unresponsive buttons do not affect the original image.

Second, if you need to delete or share an edited photo, open the Google Photos website on a computer or mobile browser and perform the action there. The web version does not suffer from the same bug, so you can still manage your files while waiting for the app update.

For users who also use Google Photos on iPad Air M2, the web interface works the same way. Opening photos.google.com on the iPad lets you edit, share and delete without encountering the Android bug, providing a seamless cross‑device experience.

Other recent Android problems

The Google Photos glitch joins a series of issues that have plagued the Android 17 platform this year. Users have reported connectivity drops, touchscreen lag and, in rare cases, devices becoming bricked after the Android 17 rollout. The Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 6a and Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra have all received multiple patches to address these problems.

What to expect next

Keep an eye on the Google Play Store for a version 5.12.3 update of Google Photos. Once installed, the share, edit and delete buttons should return to normal operation. If the problem persists after updating, consider clearing the app cache or reinstalling the app as a temporary measure.

Final thoughts

While the bug is inconvenient, the work‑around steps allow users to continue editing and sharing photos without major disruption. Google has confirmed that a fix is on the way, so the issue should be fully resolved shortly.

Staying up to date with the latest Android security patches and Google Play updates is the best defence against unexpected bugs. Regularly checking the Settings > System > Advanced > System update menu on Pixel 7 Pro or Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra ensures you receive fixes as soon as they are released.

Google Issues Urgent Security Patch Amidst Zero-Day Threat

Google Issues Urgent Security Patch Amidst Zero-Day Threat

Google’s Latest Security Patch: Navigating the Zero-Day Landscape

Google has once again demonstrated its proactive stance on cybersecurity by rolling out an urgent emergency fix addressing a newly discovered zero-day vulnerability. This critical update highlights the continuous, evolving challenges in the digital security realm, ensuring the integrity and safety of users worldwide. Such rapid responses are fundamental in safeguarding vast online ecosystems from potential threats.

A zero-day vulnerability refers to a security flaw that has been identified and potentially exploited by malicious actors before software developers are aware of it or have had a chance to develop and release a patch. This makes them particularly insidious, as there is no existing defence against them until an update is deployed. Their stealthy nature demands immediate and decisive action from tech giants like Google.

The decision to withhold specific details about the vulnerability until the patch is widely deployed is a standard and responsible practice within the cybersecurity community. This strategic silence is crucial; it prevents threat actors from leveraging the information to exploit systems that have not yet received the update. Google prioritises user protection above all else during such critical periods of risk.

Whilst the exact nature of this particular vulnerability remains undisclosed, zero-day exploits can range significantly in their potential impact. They often target operating systems, web browsers, or widely used applications, potentially leading to data breaches, system compromise, or the installation of malware. Users are advised to take these threats seriously and act promptly when updates become available.

For individuals, the most effective defence against such sophisticated threats is ensuring all Google products, especially the Chrome browser, and their operating systems are kept meticulously up-to-date. Automatic updates are often enabled by default, but a manual check can provide extra assurance. Proactive user engagement significantly bolsters personal and collective online security postures.

Organisations, especially those heavily reliant on Google’s suite of services, face an even greater imperative to maintain rigorous patch management protocols. Implementing updates across an entire network requires careful planning and execution, yet delaying could expose critical infrastructure to undue risk. Robust cybersecurity policies and employee training are vital components of a resilient defence strategy.

This incident serves as a salient reminder of the persistent cat-and-mouse game played between security researchers and cybercriminals. Google invests heavily in its security teams and collaborates with independent experts to identify and rectify vulnerabilities before they can cause widespread harm. Their commitment safeguards the privacy and operational continuity for billions of users daily.

The swift release of this emergency fix underscores Google’s dedication to maintaining a secure digital environment. It reaffirms their role as a leading innovator not just in technology, but also in the crucial domain of online safety. Trust in digital platforms largely hinges on the ability of providers to respond effectively to emergent security challenges without hesitation or delay.

Users should remain vigilant and foster a healthy scepticism towards unsolicited links or suspicious email attachments, as these often serve as vectors for exploits. Even with patches deployed, social engineering tactics can still bypass technical safeguards. A layered security approach, combining software updates with informed user behaviour, offers the strongest protection against evolving threats.

In conclusion, whilst the full technical specifications of this latest zero-day fix are currently under wraps, the message is clear: regular software updates are non-negotiable. Google’s swift action provides a necessary shield, and users’ diligence in applying these patches completes the defensive perimeter. Staying informed and compliant with security recommendations is paramount in today’s interconnected world.

Google Forgets Pixelsnap Ecosystem

Google Pixel 11

Google Forgot About Pixelsnap

The dust is starting to settle on Google’s huge Pixel 11 launch. But I feel that something’s missing. I’m disappointed that Pixelsnap seems to have been almost forgotten. At last year’s Pixel 10 launch, Google talked about its new built-in Qi2 magnetic wireless charging.

By contrast, all we got this year was a few new colours of the Pixelsnap Ring Stand. I love Canyon and Olive hues, but it feels like a lazy approach. Most rivals, like Samsung Galaxy S25, are yet to add this feature, making it even stranger.

The Possibilities Are Endless

No one at Google could claim that it’s got close to exhausting the possible options for Pixelsnap. Its first-party lineup consists of just three products: a charger, a charger with a stand and the aforementioned ring stand. From reviewing the Pixelsnap Ring Stand and Pixelsnap Charger with Stand last year, there’s definitely room for improvement – and a new lick of paint won’t solve that.

There are so many more accessories that it could make. Just take a look at Apple’s extensive lineup of MagSafe accessories for the iPhone 14 Pro! Sure, many MagSafe accessories are also compatible with Pixelsnap, but if that were Google’s argument, why did it make any first-party options in the first place? Magnetic wallets, grips, mounts, portable chargers – there are so many obvious examples of great Pixelsnap accessories – and the whole point is that, like the new cases each year, they fit perfectly with the phones in not just colour but also style.

Others I’d love to see include a ring light, passport holder and camera grips, all of which would be extremely useful. It’d make so much sense, especially with the rise of smartphone photography with devices like the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. Google could also take inspiration from other brands like Apple, with its Apple Watch Series 10 and iPad Air M2, which offer a wide range of accessories.

Samsung Could Hit Back

Google’s lack of Pixelsnap innovation opens the door for one of its key rivals – Samsung. For some reason, the Korean giant hasn’t included built-in magnets on any of its 2026 flagships, relying on cases for Qi2 compatibility. However, an established leaker suggests that Samsung will finally add the functionality to the upcoming Galaxy S27 series. If true, the first-party lineup of accessories is likely to be as good as, if not better than, the current Pixelsnap options.

In short, Google would’ve had a head start of almost 18 months on Samsung, yet has failed to properly establish its magnetic charging and accessory ecosystem. The Pixel 11 launch event represented a major missed opportunity, especially with the growing demand for wireless charging and accessories for devices like the Google Pixel 11 Pro.
