Honor Magic 9 Takes Aim at Best Camera Phone Crown
Honor has offered a sneak peek at its forthcoming Magic 9 flagship smartphone series, which could come with some intriguing camera upgrades. The phone is set to be officially announced in September, a bit earlier than expected, given that the Magic 8 launched in October last year.
The teaser revealed a glimpse at the Honor Magic 9’s camera module, complete with a pro camera-style ridged lens surround. This has led to speculation that the new model might feature a rotating camera control. The shot also confirms that at least one of the sensors will be a 1/1.4-inch 200Mp sensor, backed by OIS, similar to the 3.7x telephoto camera in the Honor Magic 8 Pro.
Arri Partnership
The presence of Arri branding in the teaser shot is also notable. Arri is a German video camera specialist that announced a partnership with Honor back in March. This partnership is expected to bring native Log-C3 video encoding, LUT color grading, and a dedicated cinema mode to the Honor Magic 9 series.
The Honor Magic 8 Pro was well-received, with its emulation of Apple’s Face ID system being a notable feature. However, there were areas that needed improvement, such as camera consistency and software. Hopefully, the Honor Magic 9 will address these issues and provide a strong challenge to Samsung, especially given the suggestion that Samsung’s new 200Mp camera sensor might not be used in its own Galaxy S27 series.
Competition and Future Prospects
The way could be open for Honor to challenge Samsung in early 2027. The Samsung Galaxy S27 series is expected to be a major player in the market, but if it doesn’t feature the new 200Mp camera sensor, Honor might have an opportunity to gain an edge. Other competitors, such as Google with its Pixel 11 series, and Apple with its iPhone 18 series, will also be vying for market share.
