Samsung Misses Opportunity at Galaxy Unpacked

This week’s Galaxy Unpacked event in London was a successful launch, with the arrival of new Galaxy Z foldable phones, such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5, and Galaxy Watch wearables, including the Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 and Watch Ultra 2. However, something was missing from the event – the Samsung Galaxy Ring 2.

I watched the Unpacked live stream, hoping for a surprise teaser for the smart ring, especially since the original Samsung Galaxy Ring was first revealed at Unpacked in January 2024. It took six months until the Galaxy Ring launched properly, meaning that Samsung’s July 2026 Unpacked lined up perfectly for a two-year refresh for its smart ring.

Galaxy Ring 2 Absence

Alas, the only Galaxy Ring mention was that the original will be the first smart ring approved (FDA-cleared) to detect sleep apnea, joining the likes of the Apple Watch Series 10 and Fitbit Charge 6. That’s great news for existing owners, but it’s time for a follow-up. Two years is plenty of time, but Samsung seems to be happy to wait even longer until it launches the Galaxy Ring 2.

When asked for a comment, I got the typical response stating: “Samsung doesn’t speculate or comment on upcoming product launches.” It’s rumoured to launch in early 2027, so we could see it at Unpacked alongside the Samsung Galaxy S27 series of phones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S27 and S27 Plus, and other devices like the iPad Air M2.

Missed Opportunity

Oura launched the Oura Ring 5 way sooner than expected, and it’s also a big year for screenless fitness trackers with the arrival of the Fitbit Air and Garmin Cirqa. Samsung should be striking now when people may be considering picking up one of those affordable smart bands, such as the Amazon Halo or Xiaomi Mi Band 8, or swapping their ageing and probably battered Galaxy Ring for an Oura Ring 5 or another rival.

It would have been a perfect companion to go with the Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 and Watch Ultra 2, as using them together will presumably lead to better data and longer battery life like the Galaxy Ring currently does with Samsung’s smartwatches, but it seems the wait goes on and it may still be a while yet.
