Xiaomi’s Widescreen Galaxy Z Fold 8 Rival

More details concerning Xiaomi’s big bet to take on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 have emerged online. In case your attention has been elsewhere over the past couple of weeks – perhaps your brain has been quietly cooking in the infernal heat – people seem to be rather taken by the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8.

Wide foldables are the flavour of the month, if not year, with Apple hotly tipped to follow. Unsurprisingly, then, a bunch of other companies are set to join the fray. One of those is Xiaomi with its Mix Fold 5, which has just appeared again in a fresh image leak, courtesy of a Weibo tipster.

Xiaomi Mix Fold 5 Design

As you can see from the above image (via Android Headlines), which shows the Xiaomi Mix Fold 5 in its open state, this is an altogether wider foldable than the Xiaomi Mix Fold 4, with a 4:3 aspect ratio inner display. No points for originality there. However, the corners do appear to be quite a bit rounder than Samsung’s recent effort. The selfie camera is stashed away in the corner, too, which I prefer to Samsung’s awkward three-quarters-of-the-way-across positioning.

HyperOS 4, meanwhile, looks to be every inch the iOS-inspired Android UI we’d expect it to be. It’s wearing its Liquid Glass design inspiration on its sleeve, that’s for sure. The new UI demonstrates improved animation and responsiveness, as well as a new large language model through Super XiaoAi 2.0.

HyperOS 4 Beta Reveals All

As GizmoChina reports, Xiaomi has commenced rolling out betas for its new Android 17 skin. In showing the flexibility of this new UI to work across different screen configurations, Xiaomi appears to have confirmed the Mix Fold 5’s new shape. As you can see from the above image, the UI has been optimised to fit a new wider foldable display area that doesn’t seem to apply to Xiaomi’s current roster of devices.

Rumour has it that we’ll be seeing the Xiaomi Mix Fold 5 very shortly, potentially in early September, which is also when the iPhone Ultra is expected. Whether it’ll even make its way to Western markets remains an open question. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 is currently available for £1699 at Samsung.
