New Samsung Camera Sensor Announced

Samsung has announced a new 200Mp camera sensor, the ISOCELL HPC, with improved performance. The sensor boasts better light capture, reduced noise, and improved dynamic range, making it an attractive prospect for smartphone enthusiasts. However, it’s unlikely to feature in the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S27 range, including the flagship S27 Ultra.

The ISOCELL HPC sensor features a range of technologies, including Samsung’s industry-first DeepPix, which aims to ‘redefine how light is captured’. This technology, combined with better HDR performance and 4K video at 180fps for slow motion, makes for a compelling camera experience. The DeepPix technology is described by Samsung as ‘a new pixel structure engineered to improve Full Well Capacity (FWC)’, leveraging the company’s advanced Front Deep Trench Isolation (FDTI) to increase single-pixel FWC by 60% over the previous generation.

Implications for the Galaxy S27 Range

While the ISOCELL HPC sensor shares the same core specs as the main module found on the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra, including a 1/1.3-inch sensor with 0.6μm pixels and Super Quad Phase-Detection autofocus, it’s primarily manufactured for other phone makers to purchase and fit to their devices. This means that the likes of Vivo, Xiaomi, and Oppo are more likely to feature this sensor in their upcoming phones, rather than the Samsung Galaxy S27 range.

Instead, the Galaxy S27 is rumoured to feature an ISOCELL HP6 module, which, although not the same as the HPC module, is still expected to offer a 200Mp camera at 1/1.3-inch with various improvements. The decision to use a different sensor is likely a business-first approach, with Samsung looking to cut costs by dropping one camera from the Galaxy S27 range.

In comparison to other flagship devices, such as the Apple iPhone 17 Pro or the Google Pixel 8 Pro, the Samsung Galaxy S27 range will still offer a competitive camera experience. However, the lack of the ISOCELL HPC sensor may be a disappointment for some fans. On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy S27 range is expected to offer other features, such as improved performance, enhanced displays, and potentially even 5G connectivity, making it a compelling option for those looking to upgrade from devices like the Samsung Galaxy S25 or the Apple Watch Series 10.
