Roku has partnered with NBCUniversal to bring cloud DVR to Peacock Premium Plus subscribers, allowing them to record live content, including Premier League matches and NFL games, and access it at any time via their Roku device.

This innovative feature is a major boost for sports fans, who can now relive their favourite moments without the need for bulky hardware or built-in storage.

Although DVR services have fallen out of favour with the rise of streaming services, they remain essential for live events that are not available on-demand, making Roku’s cloud-based solution a compelling offer.

Peacock Premium Plus subscribers can enjoy ad-free streaming, offline downloads, and unrestricted access to the full Peacock catalogue, all for £16.99 a month or £169.99 annually.

Roku’s strategic move is likely to give its devices a competitive edge in the UK market, where streaming boxes and sticks from Apple, Amazon, and others are highly popular.

The company has hinted that cloud DVR may be extended to more services later this year, potentially including Netflix and Disney+, which are investing heavily in live sports.

Currently, this feature is only available to Roku users in the US, but its appeal is likely to be global, especially in the UK, where Sky no longer offers on-device recording with its Sky Q box.
