Unlocking the Potential of WearOS 7

With the recent Google I/O event, WearOS 7 has emerged as a hidden star, offering a range of exciting features and improvements. Despite being overshadowed by Android 17 and Gemini AI, WearOS 7 is set to revolutionise the smartwatch experience in the UK.

Google engineer John Zoeller has highlighted key enhancements, including the introduction of widgets, Live Updates, and improved workout apps. These features are designed to make WearOS 7 the best smartwatch platform in the business.

WearOS welcomes widgets, with a more flexible and dynamic style, featuring two sizes: 2×1 and 2×2. This approach brings WearOS more in line with the wider Android platform, offering a seamless user experience.

Live Updates, inspired by Android 16, surface real-time information in a glanceable format. This feature is perfect for tracking real-time progress indicators, such as food orders, directly on your watch.

Workouts are about to get better, with an improved third-party workout app experience. Google has built a standardised Wear Workout Tracker experience, incorporating heart rate monitoring, media controls, and other features.

Improved media playback control allows users to select which media controls automatically appear when a media app is opened. Additionally, users can change where audio is pushed to when playing media from their paired phone.

Longer battery life is also a significant enhancement, with Google estimating an average of up to 10% improvement in battery life for users upgrading from Wear OS 6 to Wear OS 7.

Developers can now test their apps on WearOS 7 using the Wear OS 7 Canary Emulator, while the platform itself will roll out to compatible smartwatches later this year in the UK.
